Cross Country at Chipper Kyle Farm

Tiffany and Rick Cyr

When I first saw the land here, I fell in love. I wanted to create training grounds that would have an atmosphere similar to those I enjoyed 30 years ago. I began by studying the evolution of jump building. Riders didn't hear words like, "portables" and "moveable on skids" in the 70's. My obstacles would have to be extra safe and extra solid. I wanted horses to have lots of fun on my courses.

Consulting with USEA officials got me started with designing the flow of the tracks, and the sequence of obstacles. I learned lots about ground lines and what fences are appropriate at each level. My USEA guidelines for obstacle building became a bit like a bible. Eventing constantly changes as we learn more about the science of equine bio-mechanics and reasoning. I view the fine tuning of my courses as an ongoing responsibility.

I am very lucky to have a good source of materials for use in constructing obstacles. The jumps are substantial and inviting. It's very nice that builder, Rick Cyr also owns and operates a Tree Service. Having access to good logs means we are able to give extra length to the face of jumps, which is desirable at the lower levels.

There are 54 fences and ground has been broken on our new water complex. We have four levels (Elementary through Training), and a plan for a Preliminary course design is in the works. 2007 will find us developing our skidder trails in the woods, adding more combinations, options, and maximum height Training fences.

The footing on our tracks is excellent. We receive many compliments on it. Riders also love the real feeling of "travel" they get on the courses. I use the courses in my own training, so I maintain the tracks regularly. In 2005 I added sand to take-off and landing zones to combat weather related problems, and reduce stress on joints. New turf has since rooted in that sand, making it less noticeable to the horse. The fee for cross country schooling is $30.00.
